Tests

Those who are considering applying to criminal justice programs should be well-prepared for standardized tests. As with most activities, practice will improve performance when it comes to standardized tests. Students should examine old test banks and sample tests and questions in order to become familiar with the test that they will be taking. When students practice taking these tests, they should be cognizant of the time allowances for each section of the test.

Students should also be familiar with the score requirements of each institution and/or program to which they are applying. If students know what scores are expected for admission, and in what categories or sections of the test these required scores should be, they will be able to create a plan to help themselves practice for the test and eventually attain the required scores. Review of the basic skills covered on a particular test is essential to success on that test, so students should be prepared to review material that they learned in the past. For example, students taking the ACT should review grammar rules such as comma usage, modifier placement, and capitalization. Each standardized test has different types of questions and tests students on their expertise in various subjects and material.
